25th September 2010: OWE 1 – 0 Northfield
With the threats of their parents still ringing in their ears as to how miserable life could be for them if the Northfield supporters were given the season’s bragging rights OWE set to work but they were not going to make it easy for anyone watching. Having been roundly beaten the week before, everyone expected a wounded opposition to be raring to get back to winning ways.
The starting line up was the same as the previous week with Josh and Lewis in defence, Harvey and Robert in midfield and Scott and George in attach. I can’t remember the goalie’s name but he has played before I’m told.
Early pressure from OWE saw a long range shot from Harvey passing just over the bar. George worked hard on the wing and the early pressure eventually told when OWE went 1 – 0 up. The manager thought it was an own goal. This correspondent thought Scott got a touch but Robert suggested a visit to Specsavers would have given him the goal. Unfortunately by the time this possible error came to light the official score had been submitted and the goal stands as Scott’s. Anyone with money on Robert should contact the Hightown pools’ ombudsman – or stop betting on kids’ football.
After that OWE maintained the pressure and generated some neat passing but were unable to score a second despite the best efforts of Lewis in particular who forced a good save from the Northfield keeper. George and Scott made way for George and Marcus. Half time.
Despite an expected fightback from Northfield in the second half OWE held on to the lead much to the relief of all. Even one of the Northfield supporters communicated her congratulations to OWE on the final whistle with a double victory sign – or at least I think her hands were that way round.
Man of the Match: Ben for some effective marshalling and crucial saves.
Goals: Scott (1) – sorry Robert.
